What is Induction Heating?

Induction heating is a non-contact method that uses an electromagnetic field to heat electrically conductive materials, such as metals.

An alternating current in a coil creates a magnetic field, which induces "eddy currents" in the workpiece. These currents generate heat directly within the material, making the process efficient, fast, and precise.

How they work

Create an electromagnetic field

A high-frequency alternating current runs through a coil, which creates a strong, fluctuating magnetic field.

Induce eddy currents

When the workpiece is placed inside or near this field, the changing magnetic field induces electrical currents (eddy currents) within the workpiece.

Generate heat

The resistance of the material to the flow of these induced currents generates heat directly within the workpiece itself.

Transfer heat

The heat is then transferred throughout the part by thermal conduction.

Key characteristics and benefits

Non-contact: The coil does not touch the workpiece, allowing for heating without physical contact.

High efficiency: Heat is generated directly inside the material, with very little wasted energy lost to the surrounding air.

Fast and precise: The heating process can be very fast and highly controlled, allowing for precise temperature management.

Clean and safe: It eliminates open flames, reducing fire hazards and creating a safer work environment compared to methods like open-flame heating.

Versatile: It can be used for a wide range of applications, including hardening, brazing, soldering, melting, and forging.

Repeatable: The process is highly reproducible, which is critical for many industrial applications.
